Hemantha is an independent international consultant and has over 42 years of International experience in Senior Management positions spanning industries such as Financial Services (Financial Inclusion, Microfinance and Mainstream finance), Livelihoods, CSR, Agro-Products, FMCG and OE Industrial Products.
Presently, he is working in the areas of development such as assessments, evaluations conducting studies and surveys, capacity building, mentoring with a larger focus on to the domains of CSR and financial inclusion (Mainstream and Micro Finance, Entrepreneurship, Livelihoods etc.) in Africa and Asia, especially in South East Asia.
As a qualified trainer, he has been training and mentoring since 2002 across innumerable programmes. He had travelled wide in India, as also in several countries across the globe. His hands-on experience in India, South East Asian (SEA) countries, in the Mekong / Indo-China Region, especially in Laos & Cambodia afforded him national / international presence and visibility in the development services.
Based out of Chennai, India, Hemantha was earlier the Managing Director of Hand in Hand Micro Finance Private Limited, an associate organisation of Hand in Hand India, an international NGO. Apart from paying a crucial role in acquiring a Non Banking Finance Company (NBFC), he was directly involved in the successful execution of the Microfinance assignment in Brazil and was a key player in finalising partnership arrangements in Cambodia and Myanmar, for Hand in Hand. He was also involved with GIZ in Laos PDR for their Access to Finance Programme, as a Microfinance Adviser. He also worked with organisations like Godrej Soaps and Apple Credit in India.
He is an experienced public speaker and was a TED X speaker on ‘Social Entrepreneurship’ as well as being an avid blogger, writing under ‘Hemantha Kalam’. Below are some of his published work:
(I) a Study to “Assess the Results (Outcomes) and Immediate Impacts of Project Mission SoS (Sanitation of Schools) in Nagapattinam District, Tamil Nadu, India” for CII Foundation of Confederation of Indian Industry, India (This was a SCR assessment),
(II) leading a Macroeconomic Study of “Implication of Small Scale Farmers’ investment in the four Lower Mekong River Basin Countries (Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam)” as a sub-contracted consultant for OXFAM, Cambodia,
(III) a Report on “Monitoring, Evaluating and Learning (MEL) study assignment in Laos PDR, for a project funded by European Union, as a consultant of SRI-LMB Project of Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) Thailand”. The study was undertaken across 38 villages of 12 districts in 3 provinces of Khammouane, Savannakhet and Vientiane of Laos PDR.
(IV) a Techno-Legal document on “National Voluntary Savings Schemes in India” for Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, National Savings Institute, & UNDP India,
(V) editing and compiling “Policy Practice Atlas on Microfinance” for UNDP India,
(VI) a study on “Business/Banking Correspondents in Tamil Nadu” for CARE India,
(VII) a World Bank Programme of “Review various Microfinance and Village Funds applied in Khammouane Province” at Laos PDR,
(VIII) a Background paper on “Mainstreaming Financial Inclusion for Urban Poor – A Community Consultation and Dialogue with Policy Makers” for NIDAN & UNDP India,
(IX) a reference-report on “Financial Literacy as a Tool for Financial Inclusion and Client Protection” for UNDP India.
